What Is the Theory Test?
The Theory Test is a crucial part of learning to drive in the UK. It’s designed to assess your understanding of the rules of the road and your ability to recognise and respond to developing hazards. You must pass the Theory Test before booking your Practical Driving Test.
The test is divided into two parts, both of which are taken on the same day at an official test centre:
1. Multiple-Choice Questions
- Tests your knowledge of the Highway Code, road signs, safety, and driving theory.
- Contains 50 questions, with a passing score of 43 or more.
- You’ll have 57 minutes to complete this section.
- Some questions are based on short case studies.
2. Hazard Perception Test
- Includes 14 video clips of real-world driving scenarios.
- Your task is to identify developing hazards quickly and accurately.
- You can earn up to 75 points; the pass mark is 44 points.
- One clip will contain two developing hazards; the rest will have one.
Preparing for the Theory Test
Passing the Theory Test requires thorough preparation. It lays the foundation for safe, confident driving and helps ensure success in your practical test as well.
- Study the Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs, and Driving – The Essential Skills.
- Use official DVSA apps or trusted online platforms to practise questions and take mock exams.
- Practise hazard perception clips regularly to sharpen your reaction time.
- Use timed tests to simulate real exam conditions and build confidence.
Tip: Many learners overlook the hazard perception part—be sure to practise both sections equally!
