Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

1. How many lessons will I need to pass my driving test?
Every learner is different. The DVSA recommends an average of 44 hours of professional tuition and 22 hours of private practice. Some people need as few as 5 lessons, others may need 30 or more — it largely depends on your experience, learning style, and confidence. After your first lesson, I can give you a more personalised estimate.

2. How long is each lesson?
All lessons are 2 hours long, which gives us enough time to make meaningful progress each session.

3. How much do lessons cost?
You can find my up-to-date pricing here.

4. How often should I take lessons?
Ideally, weekly or bi-weekly lessons work best for steady progress. Consistency helps you retain skills and build confidence.

5. When will I be ready for my driving test?
As mentioned earlier, everyone learns at a different pace. Once we’ve completed your first lesson, I’ll assess your current level and give you a realistic timeline to work towards your test.

6. What happens if I fail my driving test?
It’s not uncommon to need more than one attempt. If you don’t pass, we’ll review your feedback, work on the areas that need improvement, and rebook your test when you’re ready. I’ll support you every step of the way.

7. Will I always have the same instructor/car?
Yes, you’ll always learn with me in the same car — consistency is key to your progress.

8. Do you teach manual or automatic?
Both manual and automatic lessons are available — just let me know your preference.

9. What if I make a mistake while driving?
Mistakes are completely normal — they’re part of the learning process! I’ll help you understand what went wrong and how to improve without pressure.

10. What should I wear for lessons?
Please wear comfortable clothes and flat-soled shoes (no flip-flops or heels). Good footwear helps with pedal control and overall safety.

11. What areas do you cover?
I currently cover the following areas in Edinburgh:
– EH1
– EH2
– EH3 (partly)
– EH5 (mostly)
– EH6
– EH7
– EH8

12. What car do you use?
I use modern, comfortable vehicles tailored to your transmission preference:
Automatic: Toyota Yaris – Equipped with heated seats, air conditioning, parking sensors (front and rear), and a reversing camera.
Manual: Suzuki Swift – A comfortable modern car with air conditioning, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

13. Do I need my provisional licence before starting lessons?
Yes, it’s a legal requirement to have your provisional driving licence before driving on public roads.

14. Can you pick me up from home/work/school?
Yes, as long as the location is within my operating area, I’m happy to accommodate pickups and drop-offs.

15. What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?
Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice for cancellations. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged in full.

16. Do you do 1-hour lessons?
I only offer 2-hour lessons as they provide better continuity and value for meaningful progress in each session.

17. What should I bring to my first lesson?
– Your provisional driving licence

18. Can I practise with my parents/family in between lessons?
Definitely — private practice can be extremely beneficial. Just make sure:
– You’re insured to drive the car
– You display L plates
– Your accompanying driver is over 21 and has held a full UK licence for at least 3 years

Driving Test-Related Questions

1. What are the most common reasons people fail their test?
The most common reasons include lack of planning, poor observation, and inadequate awareness of surroundings. We’ll focus on these areas throughout your training.

2. What’s the test route like?
Test routes usually cover a variety of roads with different conditions and speed limits. If you can drive safely and confidently, you’ll be well-prepared for any route.

3. Can I use your car for my test?
Yes, you can use my car for your test. This would typically be booked as a 2 or 2.5-hour session, depending on the location of the test centre.
Please provide at least 3 weeks’ notice, and keep in mind that use of the car is subject to being test-ready. As an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), I cannot present a pupil who isn’t at the required standard.

4. Do you come with me on the driving test?
Yes, I can sit in the back during your test as a silent observer. However, I’m not allowed to assist or speak during the assessment.

5. Can we practice mock tests?
Absolutely — once you’re at the right stage, we’ll run through full mock tests to prepare you thoroughly.

Learning & Progress

1. Do you give feedback after each lesson?
Absolutely. After every lesson, we’ll discuss what went well, areas for improvement, and set clear goals for the next session.

2. Will we drive on motorways?
As a qualified ADI, I can take you on motorways. However, due to our location (30 minutes from the nearest motorway), we generally focus on more relevant local routes. If you’d like to specifically practise motorway driving, I can arrange this.

3. When will I start learning manoeuvres like parallel parking?
We’ll usually begin manoeuvres once you’ve developed good car control, steering, and spatial awareness. This ensures you’re well-prepared and confident when we tackle them.

4. Can you help me with my weaknesses?
Of course! Each lesson is tailored to focus on your individual needs. We’ll always work on the areas that need improvement to help you become a safe, confident driver.
