Edinburgh Driving Lessons – Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

1. How many lessons will I need to pass my driving test?

Every learner is different. The DVSA recommends an average of 44 hours of professional tuition and 22 hours of private practice. Some people need as few as 5 lessons, others may need 30 or more — it largely depends on your experience, learning style, and confidence. After your first lesson, we can give you a more personalised estimate.

2. How long is each lesson?

All lessons are 2 hours long, which gives us enough time to make meaningful progress each session.

3. How much do lessons cost?

You can find our up-to-date pricing on our Lesson Prices page.

4. How often should I take lessons?

Ideally, weekly or bi-weekly lessons work best for steady progress. Consistency helps you retain skills and build confidence.

5. When will I be ready for my driving test?

Everyone learns at a different pace. Once we’ve completed your first lesson, we’ll assess your current level and give you a realistic timeline to work towards your test.

6. What happens if I fail my driving test?

It’s not uncommon to need more than one attempt. If you don’t pass, we’ll review your feedback, work on the areas that need improvement, and rebook your test when you’re ready. We’ll support you every step of the way.

7. Will I always have the same instructor?

We aim to keep you with the same instructor throughout your learning — consistency is key to your progress.

8. Do you teach manual or automatic?

Both manual and automatic lessons are available — just let us know your preference when booking.

9. Should I learn in a manual or automatic car?

It depends on your goals. If you pass in an automatic, your licence will restrict you to automatic cars only. If you pass in a manual, you can drive both. Manual lessons suit those who want full flexibility. Automatic lessons are a great choice if you find manual gear changes stressful, or if you mainly plan to drive automatics. We offer both — speak to us if you’re unsure which is right for you.

10. If I pass in an automatic, can I then drive a manual car?

No. An automatic-only pass means your driving licence is restricted to automatic vehicles. To drive a manual, you would need to take and pass the practical test again in a manual car.

11. What if I make a mistake while driving?

Mistakes are completely normal — they’re part of the learning process! Your instructor will help you understand what went wrong and how to improve, without pressure.

12. What should I wear for lessons?

Please wear comfortable clothes and flat-soled shoes (no flip-flops or heels). Good footwear helps with pedal control and overall safety.

13. What areas of Edinburgh do you cover?

We currently cover: EH1, EH2, EH3 (partly), EH5 (mostly), EH6, EH7, and EH8.

14. What car will I learn in?

Automatic lessons are taught in a Toyota Yaris with heated seats, air conditioning, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera. Manual lessons are taught in a Suzuki Swift with air conditioning, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera. Both are modern, comfortable, dual-controlled vehicles.

15. Do I need my provisional licence before starting lessons?

Yes, it is a legal requirement to have your provisional driving licence before driving on public roads.

16. Can you pick me up from home, work, or school?

Yes, as long as the location is within our operating area, we’re happy to accommodate pickups and drop-offs.

17. What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?

Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice for cancellations. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged in full.

18. Do you do 1-hour lessons?

We only offer 2-hour lessons as they provide better continuity and value for meaningful progress each session.

19. What should I bring to my first lesson?

Please bring: your provisional driving licence, glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving, and comfortable flat-soled footwear.

20. Can I practise with my parents or family between lessons?

Definitely — private practice can be extremely beneficial. Just make sure you are insured to drive the car, you display L plates, and your accompanying driver is over 21 and has held a full UK licence for at least 3 years.

21. I’m a nervous driver — can you help me build confidence?

Absolutely. Many of our students start out nervous, and that’s completely normal. Our instructor is patient, calm, and experienced in helping anxious learners build confidence at their own pace. We start in quiet areas and progress gradually — there’s no rush.

22. Do you teach complete beginners?

Yes, we welcome complete beginners. Your first lesson will start with an introduction to the car controls in a quiet, low-traffic area. There’s no expectation to drive on busy roads until you feel ready.

23. Is Joy Driving School’s instructor fully qualified?

Yes. Sharif Iftekhar is a DVSA-approved Driving Instructor (ADI) — fully qualified, having passed all three ADI qualification exams. You can verify this by the green octagon badge displayed in our car. A green badge means fully qualified; a pink badge means the instructor is still in training.

The Driving Test

1. What are the most common reasons people fail their test?

The most common reasons include lack of planning at junctions, poor observation, and inadequate awareness of surroundings. We’ll focus on these areas throughout your training.

2. What’s the test route like?

Test routes cover a variety of roads with different conditions and speed limits. We regularly practise on routes around Musselburgh Driving Test Centre so you’ll be well-prepared for any route on the day.

3. Can I use your car for my driving test?

Yes. This is typically booked as a 2 or 2.5-hour session. Please provide at least 3 weeks’ notice, and use of the car is subject to being test-ready as assessed by your ADI.

4. Does the instructor come with me on the driving test?

Yes, your instructor can sit in the back as a silent observer. They are not permitted to assist or speak during the assessment.

5. Can we practise mock tests?

Absolutely — once you’re at the right stage, we’ll run through full mock tests to prepare you thoroughly for the real thing.

6. Do I need to pass my theory test before booking driving lessons?

No — you can start lessons at any time with just your provisional licence. However, you must have passed your theory test before you can book your practical driving test. We recommend working towards your theory test early so it doesn’t delay your test date.

7. Can you help me prepare for the Show Me Tell Me questions?

Yes. The Show Me Tell Me questions are part of the official DVSA driving test. The examiner will ask one ‘tell me’ question before you set off and one ‘show me’ question while driving. We cover all of these during lessons — you can also find the full list on our Show Me Tell Me page.

During Your Lessons

1. Do you give feedback after each lesson?

Absolutely. After every lesson, we’ll discuss what went well, areas for improvement, and set clear goals for the next session.

2. Will we drive on motorways?

Motorway driving can be arranged if specifically requested. Due to our Edinburgh location being around 30 minutes from the nearest motorway, lessons generally focus on more relevant local routes.

3. When will I start learning manoeuvres like parallel parking?

We’ll begin manoeuvres once you’ve developed good car control, steering, and spatial awareness. This ensures you’re well-prepared and confident when we tackle them.

4. Can you help me with my weaknesses?

Of course. Each lesson is tailored to your individual needs. We’ll always work on the areas that need improvement to help you become a safe, confident driver.
