Theory Test

The UK theory test is a mandatory assessment for learner drivers, designed to evaluate their knowledge of road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. It consists of two parts: a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception test. Both must be passed to proceed to the practical driving test.

Show me Tell me – Vehicle Safety Questions

As part of the UK driving test, you’ll be asked two vehicle safety questions—commonly known as the ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ questions. One will be asked at the start of your test (Tell Me), where you’ll explain how you’d carry out a safety task, and the other while you’re driving (Show Me), where you’ll demonstrate a control such as operating the windscreen wipers or demister. These questions assess your understanding of basic car maintenance and safety checks, ensuring you can operate essential controls safely and responsibly while driving.

Practical Driving Test

The UK driving test is a practical assessment designed to ensure that learners have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to drive safely and independently. It includes a vision check, a ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ vehicle safety question section, around 40 minutes of driving on various road types, and one reversing manoeuvre. You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop. During the test, you’ll follow directions from a driving examiner and complete 20 minutes of independent driving, often using a sat nav. To pass, you must demonstrate safe, controlled driving with no more than 15 minor faults and no serious or dangerous faults.

I provide full support and preparation for learners taking their test at Musselburgh Test Centre, helping you become familiar with the local routes, road layouts, and what to expect on the day.
